Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., and the nexus of the nation’s legislative, executive, and judicial centers of power. Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Applicants are sought for a postdoctoral scholar position in Resilient Infrastructure, assisting in understanding the dynamics among disaster policy, infrastructure vulnerability, and community outcomes. The initial project will focus on the differential impacts of the Stafford Act – the legislation that authorizes post-disaster relief funding – on infrastructure performance, communities, and States. The longer-term goal of the project is to provide insights and clarity into how changes to the Stafford Act could positively transform hazard-prone regions. The anticipated scope of the work includes: data discovery on disaster aid disbursements, community hazard mitigation plans, and damage assessments; holistic evaluation of the benefits and costs, including opportunity costs, of hazard planning and mitigation on infrastructure; an analysis of how officials at multiple levels of government make decisions surrounding hazards under uncertainty; multi-scale modeling of the impacts of disaster aid on infrastructure performance; and predictive modeling for quantifying the impacts of disasters on communities. The postdoc will work with diverse stakeholders and support an interdisciplinary research team. Additionally, the postdoc will have opportunities for research dissemination, including but not limited to, conferences, workshops, and presentations to non-profits, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and government officials.

              Minimum Qualifications:

The postdoc will play an important role in facilitating collaborations with an interdisciplinary team. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Operations Research, Data Analytics, Risk Analysis, or a related field, and have a promising record of research, publications, and strong communication skills. Successful candidates will have a background in predictive data analytics for risk analysis and community resilience and also have experience in either i) infrastructure systems reliability modeling, or ii) infrastructure and disaster policy analysis. The candidate must have the ability to work independently to achieve project objectives, meet project deadlines and reporting requirements, and help mentor other group members, including undergraduates.
