              Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

              The Women’s Empowerment: Data for Gender Equality (WEDGE) project, led by Sonalde Desai and Feinian Chen, focuses on women’s economic empowerment in the developing world. This project, funded by the Hewlett Foundation, is housed at the University of Maryland. Post-doctoral scholars are expected to have a firm grasp of the relevant literature, develop and test new measures, and engage in independent and collaborative research. In addition, they will be expected to participate in the creation of a community of scholars engaged in these issues.

              Minimum Qualifications:

              Ph.D. research completed.


              -A Ph.D. in sociology, economics, demography or related quantitative social sciences.
              -Record of scholarship focused on gender, economic empowerment and the global south.
              -Able to work independently with quantitative data and experience with large datasets.
              -Editorial judgment and strong verbal and written communications skills.
              -Ability to balance numerous projects simultaneously while ensuring accuracy in data management, fact checking and research.
              -Attention to detail, including exacting standards to maintain accuracy and impartiality in all work products.
              -Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with staff from the team, as well as with staff from collaborating institutions and advisors.
