              Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

              The University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism is seeking a director to lead its Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism.

              Funded by the university and an endowment from the Povich Family and other supporters, the Povich Center produces outstanding public programs, sponsor and facilitate research related to sports journalism and serve the college and university community.

              The director will teach sports journalism courses and may be eligible for designation as a “Professor of the Practice” or a tenure-track faculty position, depending on education and experience.

              Essential Duties include:
              ? Hiring and management of staff and center
              ? Expanding Merrill College’s sports journalism curriculum
              ? Raising funds to sustain and grow the center
              ? Fostering relationships with professional news outlets.

              Minimum Qualifications:

              Bachelor’s degree required. Newsroom leadership or mentoring experience required as well as seven or more years of professional experience in sports journalism. The position requires a deep understanding of sports journalism, the ability to manage collaborations, an abiding commitment to mentoring student journalists and an appetite for scholarly research on issues of importance to sports journalism. The successful candidate will be a reporter, an editor, a leader, a collaborator and a powerful advocate for the importance of sports journalism in American culture. We are looking for someone who is excited to explore new forms of storytelling and eager to mentor the next generation of sports journalists.
